Xoom Wifi Proxy Settings

We have wifi at work. I can log in and get myself an IP address. But still no Internet?!

I used the new Xoom to muscle my way in to the IT Crowd's office and posed the problem. The answer..? I forgot the proxy details of course!

Easy solve you think. Except on the Xoom wifi you can't see the proxy settings to add this information. Motorola are doing their upmost to stop Xoom wifi owners, using wifi! I will rant about the inability to join adhoc wifi hotspots in a future post...

Anyhow it has been solved but I found some really weird bugs. I found details on this page of how to use hidden web proxy settings on Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablets. Here are my updated instructions and comments.

  • Download and install the "AnyCut" app from the Android marketplace.
  • Open the AnyCut App, and Choose New Shortcut
  • Select the “Activity” item from list
  • Currently the app does not support the Xoom so you only see a small screen.
  • The list looks empty, but it is NOT. The first few activities have no name.
  • Scroll down and the activities will appear.
  • Go down to “Proxy Settings” and tap to Select.
  • Name the new shortcut “Proxy Settings” or whatever you like, and click OK.
  • The shortcut must have a name but you can use a single space if you want plain mini icons on screen.
  • You now have a new icon on your home screen, which will open the Proxy Settings menu when tapped.
My problem was that the proxy setting did not appear after doing all of this. So I restarted the Xoom and clicked on the icon. It worked. Then a few minutes later it didn't. What?

After several reboots and some messing around I have found out that it works fine, but the moment you have clicked on any other settings it will not appear again. You can get it back in two ways. Firstly you can shutdown and restart the Xoom. Secondly you can go into
settings/applications and under running sevices stop the "Settings" process. It closes and then you can click your icon to open the proxy setting again.

Sort it out Motorola. What a faf.

I have even more! I then though why not get my hands on BetterCut. The paid version of AnyCut. Don't bother and the proxy icon generated through this app does not work at all.

1970 Xoom Calendar Issue

For some reason today when I was using the calendar on the Xoom, in monthly view, it would change to the next month with a swipe but would also become 1970!

The only way I could fix this was to go into settings and then applictions,  find the calendar app and clear the data. How odd.

Motorola Xoom USB drivers on Vista

Yeah, yeah! I have Vista on my main PC. Only as it came with it and I can't afford (too tight to buy) Windows 7. So I plugged in my Motorola Xoom and up came the open device window with no options. I could not see the storage in the device? Help!

So I found out that the Motorola driver installation software does nothing to help.

Next I found the fix which was to enable USB debugging (go to Settings, then tap Applications; Development, and check the box next to USB debugging).

Problem solved? No, it was already activated when I plugged in!

Well this is finally fixed by unplugging the USB. Deactivating USB debugging. Reconnecting the cable, and let it fail. Disconnecting the cable again and reactive the USB debugging. Then plug in the USB again. Follow?

Anyway it worked!

Motorola Xoom 5 Best Apps - Part 1

I have had my Motorola Xoom for a few days and very quicky it has become part of my everyday life. So what's app have I actually been using? I have installed loads. But these are the top five I have used the most.

1. Blogger - I have to include this as I am using it to write this blog entry. I love the Xoom keyboard and have got very quick at typing with just one hand.

2. Dropbox - Essential cloud storage. Works well and easier that unpacking the USB cable from the box.

3. ES File Explorer - Great app to browse internal storage and ftp servers.

4. TweetDeck - Even without a Xoom update this is a good app. Some pages have to be viewed portrait, but once accounts are setup it works in landscape. Just need more than one interface on screen so more like pc version.

5. Tech Buzz - I use this app on my phone to keep up to date with Android news. Comes over as a little juddery on the Xoom. But works and I uses it a couple of times each day.

Creative Zen Battery Issues

Watch "Creative Zen Complete Disassembly Video Tutorial" on YouTube

I found my Zen. It has been in a cupboard for over a year. No matter what I can't turn it on. Seems a new battery is in order.

HTC Tattoo - Goldcard, Rooting & Flashing ROM

My HTC Tattoo is getting slow and old. All I want it to do is tether with my Motorola Xoom. Well it looks like I need to bite the bullet and get myself some root access and find myself some quicker versions of Android 1.6. I first thought about getting an Android 2.x ROM but it seems those out there are not fully working.

1. Goldcard

A Goldcard is needed to gain root access. It is just a sdcard that has been specially manipulated to allow the phone to be rooted. I used these instructions successfully.

This procedure requires you to set up ADB for the phone.

2. Rooting Procedure

This worked fine. Just follow everything carefully.

3. Loading Custom ROM

I found this excellent ROM. Version 2.0 worked fine but was fully Orange branded. But I then installed version 1.7 for the built in tethering application. It looks fantastic.

And installed it using this method.
